It's my first time at PSDC, what should I expect?PDSC encourages a playful and relaxed dance atmosphere. It’s common to switch partners every song or every couple of songs during lessons and social dances. This promotes interaction and helps with exposure to different dance styles. There’s no single person responsible for inviting others to dance, and gender does not indicate dance role. Take a breath, be brave, and ask someone "Would you like to dance? I know how to [lead/follow]!" Embrace silliness, have fun, and enjoy the opportunity to connect with the dance! What to bring: Water bottle Clothes you're comfortable moving and sweating in. Casual attire or dressing up is fine! Shoes with smooth soles / minimal traction. This will help you turn and move across the floor. Handkerchief, an extra shirt, a fan, deodorant... Lindy Hop is an active dance, so if you're someone who sweats a lot please plan accordingly! What to expect: Dancing with different people. Lindy Hop is a social dance, and we change partners regularly during lessons and dances. During lessons your instructors may demonstrate something, then ask you to attempt the it several times before talking about it with the class. Each time you try something, focus on how it feels in your body. Learning dance involves developing a lot of body awareness! Music! You'll dance to both DJ'd music and Live Bands during our social dances!

Do I need a partner or previous dance experience? No partner or dance experience needed to attend PSDC's social dances or Lindy Hop 1 series! Other series, lessons, or workshops may require specific prerequisites or equivalent experience, so make sure to read the full description of events before registering. Example 1: Lindy Hop 2 requires completion of Lindy Hop 1 or equivalent experience. Example 2: A workshop may require completion of Lindy Hop 2A & 2C, or equivalent experience.
-
When do lesson series start?Lindy Hop 1 and Lindy Hop 2 begin on the first Wednesday of every month.* Lindy Hop 3 begins on the first Sunday of every month. *Exceptions made for some holidays or conflicting events.
-
Can I join a series late?Contact the instructors or PSDC in advance through the 'Contact Us' page to ask if it's okay to join late. It is up to instructors' discretion to determine whether they'll allow late registrants, as you will have already missed foundational information for that month's series. Instructors may ask you to share your dance experience or to dance with you in order to assess if you'll be able to comfortably join a series late.

What if I miss a lesson in a series?Life happens. If you miss a single lesson of a series, you may ask your instructors to tell you what you missed, but do not expect them to teach you outside of scheduled class hours. It is your responsibility to catch up on material, as our series are progressive. Missing one or two weeks of a series may make it challenging to keep up with later weeks in the series! We strongly recommend that you get in touch with other students in your class to catch up on material - this is a great way to find dancers to practice with!

What if I miss one month of Lindy Hop 2?In order to attend Lindy Hop 3, dancers are typically expected to complete all four months of Lindy Hop 2, or demonstrate equivalent experience in that content: Lindy Hop 2A: Building Up Basics Lindy Hop 2B: 6-Count & Other Rhythms Lindy Hop 2C: Spins & Turns Lindy Hop 2D: Lindy Hop & Partnered Charleston Example: If you've attended Lindy Hop 2A, 2B, and 2D, but were unable to attend Lindy Hop 2C, we ask that you take Lindy Hop 2C the next time that it is offered. But what do I do if that Lindy Hop 2 class is months away, and I've completed all the others? Ask yourself: Do I feel comfortable and confident with the other three months of Lindy Hop 2 content? If the answer is "No," we recommend that you repeat those months of Lindy Hop 2 that you. If the answer is "Yes," in the meantime you may ask each month's Lindy Hop 3 instructors if your current experience is sufficient for that month's series. Once you've attended all four Lindy Hop 2 months, you no longer need to ask for permission from the instructors to register for Lindy Hop 3.

How do I know when I'm ready to move one level of lessons to the next? When the content feels comfortable and easy for you, that's the time! Some dancers choose to take Lindy Hop 1 several times before moving on to Lindy Hop 2. Some dancers choose to take Lindy Hop 2 before moving on to Lindy Hop 3. Others may move on to Lindy Hop 3 and return to specific months of Lindy Hop 2 to refresh their memory on certain fundamentals. Repetition and practice is GOOD. It helps our body build a habit, which simultaneously allows our brains to stop thinking so hard! If you're unsure if you're ready to transition to the next level of lessons, you might find it helpful to talk to and dance with one or more of PSDC's instructors and ask for their recommendations.

I used to take Lindy Hop 2 when there were just two levels of lessons. How do I know whether I should now take Lindy Hop 2 or Lindy Hop 3?GREAT question. In March 2025, Lindy Hop 3 will be a review of ALL content that will be covered in the new Lindy Hop 2. Each week, the lesson will review one month's content of Lindy Hop 2. At the end of the lesson, instructors will note dancers' comfort with the content. You don't need to know it all perfectly, but we're aiming for general competence and comfort with the topic. March 2 - 2A March 9 - 2B March 16 - 2C March 23 - 2D March 30 - Did ya miss one of the prior weeks? Meet with an instructor one-on-one for an assessment. At the end of the month, instructors will recommend that you either: Register for Lindy Hop 2 Register for Lindy Hop 3 Register for Lindy Hop 3 and complete one or two specific months of Lindy Hop 2, if there were one or two areas of content that you may have struggled with. Unable to attend most or all of the March series? Let us know - email PSDC through our Contact Us page.
